Lauren Reisig, B.Mus (Voice Teacher)
Mission Statement
Recently, while attending The Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT) program in Toronto, I was asked why I sing. My immediate answer was, “because it sets me on fire” and really, that is what it does. Passion, adrenaline, vulnerability, and a willingness to be seen exactly as you are in the moment, and to be proud of what it is that you have to offer. Singing allows us to step outside of ourselves and to become the storyteller, to engage with the audience of one or of a thousand and to connect with those souls in a way only music can.
A goal in my music instruction is to guide students to foster their love for all the elements of storytelling in such a capacity, and to do so in an informed and technically efficient manner. My approach to singing is holistic in the sense that I believe everything is interconnected. This approach aims to integrate the physical, mental, emotional, and artistic dimensions of the singer. Optimal performance arises from harmony between body, mind, and spirit. I strive to encourage a healthy, expressive, and empowered artist and to acknowledge that singing is not just a mechanical skill but a deeply human, embodied form of communication. It takes time, effort and attention to learn as well as courage and humility to be taught.
Music education is an ongoing process with so many avenues to explore. Personally I love the drama that opera portrays. Opera is over the top in every way, be it heart wrenching or gut-busting…there is so much to unpack in an operatic story. The interplay of music and movement is something that is near to my heart, as I have trained for many years in various styles of dance. I truly believe in the concept of performance as an instance of play, and the balance of play within structure. Every singer has a reason why they do what they do and I look forward to discovering many reasons why we sing, together! If you’re looking to start your journey, good news, that means you’ve already started.
